Resistance Training Lower Mortality.

A Swedish study has found that, in addition to the more obvious benefits of increased strength and improve fitness, resistance training maybe linked to lower "all-cause" and cancer mortality.

The study of 10,000 men aged between 20 and 80 looked at the relationship between muscle strength and mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Over the follow-up period (averaging 20 years) 500 deaths occurred; 145 caused by cardiovascular disease and 199 by cancer.

The study showed "muscular strength is inversely and independently associated with deaths from all causes and cancer in men, even after adjusting for cardio respiratory fitness and other potential confounders. It might be possible to reduce all- cause mortality among men by promoting regular resistance training involving the major muscle groups of the upper and lower body 2-3 days a week. Resistance training should be a complement to rather than a replacement for aerobic exercises".
